 What is Nutritional Medicine?

 

Nutritional medicine is based on the principles of natural medicine.  The body has the ability to heal itself if given the right conditions.  Providing your body with the optimum nourishment in the form of foods and nutrients is essential for healing and restoring health.

 

Nutritional medicine is a form of medicine that is both preventative and curative. It uses the many components in your food and drink, to treat, cure or prevent the conditions of virtually every illness or disease that we are susceptible to, the vast majority of which may have been caused by your diet in the first place!


Nutritional Medicine involves the study of nutrients and the biochemistry and interaction of those elements on human body, and applies this knowledge to healing the body.  It is not restricted to physical diseases (such as heart disease, skin conditions, obesity or cancer) but also to emotional and psychological problems (e.g. depression, anxiety).


The concept of redressing illness with food is at least as old as the ancient Greeks. Hippocrates, the founder of medicine, practiced and taught nutritional medicine in his time.
